Dan Gross

Managing Director

  • Investment Oversight Committee
  • Shareholder

Dan Gross joined Pathstone in 2005, bringing 29 years of financial services experience to the firm. He is a Managing Director, responsible for both individual and tax-exempt clients, and is a voting member of the firm’s Investment Committee.  Dan spent 15 years at Scudder Investments, where he was a Managing Director.  At Scudder, he oversaw the firm’s global product group and directed the AARP Investment Program, a $13 billion fund complex. Dan has held senior roles with other leading investment management organizations including The Vanguard Group and TIAA-CREF.

With Dan’s deep credentials, he could be working at many places.  He actively chose Pathstone because it gave him the opportunity to work directly with clients again in a truly independent firm where there are no conflicts of interest.  “I like the fact that I’m working directly with clients on complex financial issues versus managing a large group of people and attending endless meetings.  As part of a small firm, I enjoy the chance to work on a variety of roles and projects.  I’m not just an air traffic controller directing other members of my team; I like to roll up my sleeves and actually research issues and build spreadsheets.  Pathstone has a collegial environment and relatively flat organizational structure that encourages collaboration and teamwork. Many of us are refugees from large financial services firms and the politics and bureaucracy they entail.”

“I have a lot of respect for individuals and families I work with.  They have good values, are generous with their wealth, and are thoughtful about transitioning their assets to the next generation.   I derive great pleasure in teaching investment concepts to their children and grandchildren.  We developed our own ‘Investments 101’ course that can be tailored to the individual needs, or offered as an investment orientation for foundation boards and investment committees.”

Dan received his BA in Economics with honors at Vassar College in 1978 and earned his MBA, majoring in Finance, from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1983. Dan has been a board member of Wide Horizons for Children and serves on the finance committees of both the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute and the Asperger’s Association of New England (AANE).  Dan lives in Wellesley, MA with his wife, two children and their dog, Violet.
