Charles Keates serves as the interim General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Pathstone. He is responsible for developing and overseeing the firm’s legal, compliance and regulatory framework for operations, ensuring compliance across all functional areas of Pathstone and its related holding company and affiliates. He acts as the primary legal advisor to the Leadership Team providing legal and business-related guidance on such areas as the firm’s registration and operation as an investment adviser as well as coordinating legal activities related to joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, integrations, and collaborations with other financial services providers.
Prior to joining Pathstone, Charles was a partner at Veritable, L.P. for 22 years serving as its General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and a member of the firm’s Executive and Operating Committees. While at Veritable, Charles oversaw the formation and ongoing operations of its affiliated private funds program covering private equity, credit, hedge funds, and other types of pooled investment vehicles. His responsibilities included investment and operational due diligence, negotiations, legal structuring, and recommendations of managers and investments to clients across investment opportunities globally in both private and public markets. During this time, he was a co-founder of Archean Capital Partners, which successfully anchored six private equity managers with over $500 million of capital commitments. Charles is also a co-founder of Pathstone’s affiliated anchor program, Cambrian Capital Partners, and remains actively involved in developing that fund platform.
Charles graduated with a BA from La Salle University, earned his JD from Seton Hall University and a Masters of Governmental Administration from the Fels Institute of Government of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and District of Columbia Bars.
Charles most recently served on the boards of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation and The Rosenbach and was chair of the Special Collections Committee of the Free Library of Philadelphia. He is chair emeritus of the board of directors of the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks and has served on numerous other boards of historic museums and artistic institutions such as the board of trustees of The Library Company of Philadelphia, The Woodlands, Bartram’s Gardens and the Philadelphia Ballet.
